The Job, Described Honestly

Position Xero is a founder-led performance marketing agency, started by Ronnie James Botes (web development and SEO) and Keegan Shane Haumann (full-stack development). We are run from South Africa and every engagement is delivered remotely to service businesses worldwide. Every client is month-to-month and can leave at the end of any billing month, so the work has to hold up. That is the standard we build to.

This role exists because the pages are the product. Paid traffic lands somewhere, and that somewhere decides whether a click becomes a booked job. A conversion event that stops firing, or a page that gets slower, costs money you can measure. Build work is already running here and other people are already doing it. This role adds to that: a set of pages and tracking that you own end to end. We hire for this role on an ongoing basis.

The pages you are reading are the reference build. Hand-written semantic HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript, root-relative extensionless URLs, JSON-LD on every indexable page, and Core Web Vitals treated as a requirement rather than a report. The home page is a WebGL build, so both kinds of work exist here. View source before you apply. It is the fastest way to find out whether this is your kind of work. The same standards run through our web design work for clients.

Fundamentals outrank framework trivia here. Expect to be asked what made a page slow and what you did about it.

What You'll Actually Do

Six things, and they are the whole job.

Build the Pages Campaigns Run On

Landing pages and websites in hand-written semantic HTML and CSS, with JavaScript where JavaScript earns its place. Campaigns go live within 10 business days of receiving account access, so pages ship inside that window.

Implement the Tracking

GA4 events, Google Ads conversion actions, the Meta pixel and Conversions API, form endpoints, and CallRail on phone-heavy campaigns. When a conversion stops firing, the cost per lead number becomes fiction.

Own Structured Data and the Plumbing

JSON-LD that validates, canonicals, redirects, sitemaps and 404 handling. Also the judgement to leave a claim out of the markup when the page cannot support it.

Keep Core Web Vitals Honest

LCP, CLS and INP measured on live pages under real conditions. Fonts, images and render-blocking CSS are the usual suspects, and they are yours to police.

Make Every Form Accessible

Labels, focus states, keyboard navigation, landmarks and colour contrast. Every form on these sites is a lead-capture form, and an inaccessible form loses leads.

App and Automation Work

The founders also run Cognexa, an AI company, and there is scope to work on builds and automations there. Scope, with no promise of a specific project.

What We're Looking For

Everything here is something we could check in a thirty-minute call or a short practical session.

  • Strong HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals: semantic markup, layout without a framework, DOM work without jQuery. Bring a framework if you want one, and keep the fundamentals underneath it.
  • Performance as a habit. You understand LCP, CLS and INP, know why fonts, images and render-blocking CSS matter, and have fixed a slow page rather than only measured one.
  • Accessibility basics that hold up under a keyboard: labels, focus states, landmarks and colour contrast.
  • Structured data in practice: JSON-LD you have written that validates, and the judgement to leave out a claim a page cannot support.
  • Comfort with APIs, modern tooling, and tracking implementation: GA4 events, conversion tags, form endpoints.
  • Something public you can point at: a repository, a live site, or a page you built. This role is unusually easy to evidence.
  • Meaningful overlap with United States and South African business hours. Where you live is up to you, and we do need to know when you are reachable.
  • Clear written and spoken English. You will explain technical decisions to business owners in several markets.

No degree is required. We care more about work you can show us and talk through than about a year count.

Helpful If You Have It

None of these are dealbreakers. Apply without them.

  • React, Next.js or a similar framework for app work.
  • Node, Python, Cloudflare Workers or serverless functions.
  • Landing-page conversion rate optimisation experience.
  • Working with AI APIs or automation.
  • Enough design sense to build from a rough direction rather than a finished design file.

How This Role Works

The things applicants ask on the first call, answered before it.

Fully remote, anywhere in the world. We are run from South Africa and all client work is already delivered remotely. That is how the agency operates, and this role fits straight into it.

Hours. Client work runs across United States and South African business days. We need meaningful overlap with those hours, and the exact schedule is agreed with you.

Employment type. Full-time.

Pay. Competitive, and discussed on the first call. We would rather agree the number in a conversation than publish a range that fits nobody.

Who you work with. Position Xero is founder-led. You can reach Ronnie James Botes (web development and SEO) and Keegan Shane Haumann (full-stack development) directly. Read about them here.

The hiring process. You apply through the form on this page, a person here reads it, and if it looks like a fit we set up a call. The steps are laid out on the careers page.
